Cash and Mobile Money: tracking collections in a cable TV agency

Updated 4 November 2026 · 4 min read

Subscribers pay in cash, by Mobile Money, sometimes in several instalments or in advance. If collections are not recorded carefully, the cash never matches what the notebook says. Here are the good habits.

Record the payment method every time

For each payment, note whether it is cash or Mobile Money. It is the only way to reconcile the physical cash with the Mobile Money account balance afterwards.

Keep the reference of Mobile Money payments

Every Mobile Money transaction has a reference. Write it on the receipt: in case of a dispute, it proves the payment and lets you find it in the account history.

Handle deposits and advance payments

  • A deposit is a partial payment: note what was paid and what is still due.
  • An advance payment covers several months: state the period covered, so you do not remind the subscriber too early.
  • Do the calculation the same way for every subscriber.

Close the day every day

  1. Add up the day’s cash collections.
  2. Add up the day’s Mobile Money collections.
  3. Compare with the money actually in the till and with the account transactions.
  4. Note any difference and look for the cause the next day, not at the end of the month.

Keep the agency’s money and personal money apart

Mixing the two is the first cause of missing cash. If possible, use a Mobile Money account reserved for the agency.
